Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I middle school with hard-working students who are committed to their education and making contributions to their community. As teachers, we strive to make our school a supportive, encouraging environment where our students are excited to learn every day. I once read a quote that said, “A good coach will make his players see what they can be rather than what they are.” I want to enable students to see their potential and become lifelong learners.
Our school is an all-girl charter school that strives to turn young ladies from low-income households into future leaders that possess integrity, compassion, and a drive to make their communities better.
This is my first year at this school and I am truly impressed by how awesome the girls are. They are eager to participate, enthusiastic about learning, and excited about doing labs. I am also amazed by how helpful they are. I am excited to be working with so many splendid young ladies. I want to help them grow and practice important life skills such as research and problem-solving.
My Project
My students need basic supplies such as erasers, lead, and markers to do their work. Many students throw away wooden pencils once the eraser is used up even though there is still half or more of the pencil. I hate seeing this waste, so I offer students erasers. By giving out erasers, it also cuts down on the number of students asking for pencils and my pencil supply lasts longer. Several students these days say that they will only write with mechanical pencils, even when they do not have a pencil and are offered a wooden one. To save instructional time, I offer lead so that they can refill their mechanical pencils and get back on task. I also tell students that they should buy lead instead of throwing out perfectly good pencils which creates more plastic pollution.
I want to create folders with supplies for students so that they will have the supplies they need to stay organized, keep up with class materials, highlight their guided notes, and study efficiently.
I typically staple a Ziploc bag on to the left side of a folder with a pencil, eraser, and highlighter in it. I do this because most students cannot afford supplies and without a folder, they typically lose their materials which makes it hard for them to study and turn in assignments.
Constantly losing assignments and notes is frustrating for both the student and teacher. Most students shove the papers from all their classes into their book bags or one binder. I have seen that students do a much better job of staying organized and turning in their work when I have provided them with a sturdy folder. Your support would enable me to provide my students with the supplies they need to be successful.
