Fifth grade is an amazing grade to teach. Children are starting to figure out their passions. Their quirky, wonderful, amazing and curious ways give me so much energy and joy. I cannot get enough of their enthusiasm. I am blessed to teach science at an outstanding charter school that houses a multitude of different cultures. Of my 112 students, 42 are ESL and my students come from a plethora of different countries, including Nigeria, Pakistan, India, and Russia. Growing up I was never blessed with such diversity, and now, I couldn’t imagine a different life.
Science is a visual experience.
My students absolutely love active, engaging projects that allow them to think outside the box. They love to try new things and actively participate in STEM-oriented labs with great enthusiasm. They are truly an inspiration.
Our school is located in west Houston surrounded by a growing community. Our school incorporates a solid STEM-based academic atmosphere. The teachers at this school work as a team to ensure that all children receive the absolute best education possible. The students are celebrated for their gifts. No child feels like they do not belong. No matter what, we are family.
My Project
I believe that when you have a students in the classroom you are meant to take them on a journey. My students receive a lot of material for science class to put in their science journals. Everything is 2 dimensional and lacks a certain authenticity. For some of my students, their scope of the real world is limited to what exposure they receive in school.
Giving students the ability to create 3 dimensional representations of their projects will raise the level of their learning experience to a new level and skyrocket them into 21st century learning.
This printer has many potential applications in my classroom. I frequently assign my students Project-Based Learning assignments. From a creature creator to understand animal adaptations to creating parts for solar powered cars, students can design their work on Chomebooks and print functioning pieces for their final project. There is no end to the learning when science is in 3D!
