My students are always buzzing with energy. They love to move, chat, participate in hands-on projects, and grow their brains. When they walk into the room, it immediately comes alive with their fun personalities. You would never guess the number of challenges many of them face each day.
As a teacher at a school that services many low to moderate socioeconomic families, it is common for students to come hungry, tired, worried, and without all the supplies they need.
Nonetheless, this never seems to affect their desire to learn and their excitement for school.
I strive to give my students an environment that they are free to explore their wonders, show their creativity, and above all, feel safe. I hope they see school as a place where they can challenge themselves, discover their passion, and feel loved.
My Project
Our current science curriculum (FOSS) is awesome! The students love the hands-on activities and I love the learning that is taking place through labs. Each week my students are asked to complete 1-2 labs based on our unit of study.
These labs are done in groups of 4 and after using the curriculum for two years, I have realized that it's most effective to give each group a bin with all the needed supplies in it.
Once the bins are handed out, students can complete the lab without getting up and grabbing any additional supplies. Because we only have a 30 minute block for science, time is very precious!
Preplanning is something that is necessary for our science curriculum. With these bins, I am able to get the science bins ready a few days before the lab. If all of the necessary items are not in the bin we spend time looking for missing items which takes away from our learning!
