"The process of scientific discovery is, in effect, a continual flight from wonder." This quote by Albert Einstein closely mirrors what I try to achieve in my classroom. But to do that, I need to supply engaging activities with lots of room to "wonder."
I teach in a rural town in Arkansas.
Students here are not close to a metropolitan area, and many have not had the opportunity to visit other cities and states and gain much background knowledge in the field of science. Students here are just as interested in science and technology as any other and relish any new and different activity presented.
My Project
I am very excited to present the project "Science Shoe Box Learning" for consideration of funding. The project would include the implementation of several mini lessons and models/experiments that each would fit inside a shoe box. The student would individually, in pairs, or in groups use the shoe box during regular classroom lessons or as an enrichment tool. G/T students would be able to use the boxes as enrichment tools as they require added engaging activities after finishing a day's lesson. Students that are needing more assistance in science can use them as a remediation tool. I have developed box ideas for the following topics: 1.) Weather (Cloud Formation); 2.) Scientific Method; 3.) Newton's Three Laws of Motion; 4.) Energy Sources.
All of these content topics are part of the Arkansas seventh grade state frameworks and student knowledge of this content will be evaluated on the 2014 Benchmark.
This project is important to not only introduce important scientific concepts, but to reinforce those ideas and let students continuously engage in hands-on activities.
I believe that when the students continuously work with these concepts, they will stick with them.
