When I say "Learning is..." my students respond with "FUN!" My students know that learning is fun, and when we move from one subject to the next, they cheer with excitement! Our day begins with our morning meeting, which is a time for our students to say hello to one another and engage in fun and interactive activities to "get our brains ready" for the day. Our day ends with an ending circle, which is a time for our students to share appreciations with one another.
Providing a positive, comfortable, and engaging learning environment for my students encourages on-task behaviors and students who come to school ready to learn.
My students live in an impoverished neighborhood and the vast majority of my students are receiving free or reduced-price lunch at school. School can be seen as a safe place for my students and they take pride in their classroom and have great care and concern for their classmates.
My Project
We study the sciences in my kindergarten and first grade classroom. We dig deep into plants and animals exploring their habitats, life cycles, needs, and their structures.
To make our learning come to life, my students enjoy hand-on activities that provide them opportunities to see and better understand what makes a plant a plant and what makes an animal and animal.
To create time for my students to explore and better understand our science themes, we use innovation centers which are hands on activities for my students to engage and collaborate in their learning. The results are students who dig deep and take ownership of their learning.
