Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My ninth and tenth grade Earth Science students need some actual rocks and minerals they can put their hands on.

I teach in a small rural district with limited resources. My students have a hard time learning science with no other resources than books and videos. In order to keep their interests, I need some equipment to keep them active and involved.

One of the most basic activities in Earth Science is classifying rocks and minerals. It teaches about the subject itself and the basics of classification and scientific method, and helps future interest in science and Chemistry. This just can't be done without some rock samples and materials. If my students can put their hands on something it becomes real for them and they begin to see that they can apply the principals they learn in science. Their interest and their confidence both begin to grow, and they begin to look forward to science class.

Your donation can change science for my students from something abstract to a real skill set that they can own and use. They can see that they can apply their knowledge and may get interested and even excited about science.
