Science Rocks!

My students need the National Geographic Hobby Rock Tumbler and extra polishing grit so they can turn their rocks they mined on their field trip into beautiful gemstones!

My Students

I am the Inclusion Math and Science teacher at my low-income school in rural Florida and have the privilege to teach 49 wonderful fourth graders. They are a happy, energetic, and eager-to-please bunch of kids who brighten my day each morning. We are a small and close-knit community but have to face many challenges to bring our students up to the next level, especially after Hurricane Irma hit and left several of our students with major damage to their homes and property.

My Project

We are learning about rocks and minerals in fourth grade. It's a very fun time in class when you can learn with your hands. We were fortunate enough to have Huck's Lost Mine come to our school and allow kids to watch a geode get cracked open AND mine for their very own rocks! The kids love their rubies, tiger eyes, and emeralds. I thought it would be nice if we could get a rock tumbler so they could polish them and see their full beauty. This tumbler would be shared with the entire school so students in all grade levels would be able to share in this learning experience.
