Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How many of you have explored science concepts through beautifully illustrated books? Brights pictures and captions stirs the imagination and makes learning more fun!
I have a diverse class of 29 beautiful students with so much potential!
They live in a highly urban area. Many of my students are exposed to poverty, abuse, drugs, and violence. Some of them face additional challenges such as having learning disabilities, autism, being a second language learner and even having life-threatening illnesses. Yet, they all try to live by our mantra:Be safe, be respectful, and be responsible. You can hear my students say that to me, to each other, and in their writings as they try to be successful people.
Located in Southern California, our school is focused on science, math, and technology. With current budget cuts and shortages, we have lost our librarian and there is no budget to buy new books.
My Project
Currently we have amazing science kits at our school that really helps the students with difficult science concepts but our selection of expository/science reading material is very limited in our library. To really improve upon literacy, build comprehension, and reinforce learned concepts students need to read a variety of genres. I want to provide my students with additional reading materials about science concepts that they can read at school and at home.
Literacy is so important to success in our society.
In our technologically advanced society, a strong background in science and math is vital. The books I'm requesting will help my students enjoy science, review/preview concepts, and give my student needed reading practice.
