Reading is not only the responsibility of the English teacher; it is the responsibility of all teachers. Reading across the curriculum is very important. I plan to use the material as a year long process that will help increase reading and comprehension skills while focusing on the science content.
The resources include sets of classroom thematic books on different science subjects. The books are full of science vocabulary and content that will help struggling readers. These books will help students build a useable vocabulary that will help to increase EOG scores.
Many students are intimidated by their text books. The thematic books are on a more kid friendly level. The students will use these books during regular class time. I will instruct the students using strategies for struggling readers: before, during and after reading. My students will use the thematic books as additional resources when studying specific units. This material will not only help jump start students curiosity it will show them that their text book is only one source for learning.
The first unit the students will be engaged in will be on cells. They will be engaged in the before, during and after reading strategies that I learned at a workshop. These strategies will help the students point out main ideas, structures and functions of cells, and cellular reproduction. This material will allow for either cooperative learning or individual learning depending on the students learning styles. ´
his material will reach my regular students as well as my mainstreamed students who have modifications. One example of the lesson is the bookmarks. The students fold the papers vertically and put headings for each topic (personal responses, important information and questions). When bookmarks are completed the students get with a partner or group to share their results.
These thematic books promote discovery, broaden background knowledge and schema, encourage authentic learning, enhance visual literacy, and build vocabulary as well as critical reading skills. This material will not only impact the 146 eight graders this year it will be used in years to come. This material will be very useful and will help increase reading comprehension that will promote life-long learning. I hope this material will spark the interest of students so they might become life long readers and hold a high interest in science.
