This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"These books suck! They're boring!" I wanted to cry when I heard two of my second graders saying this. I am so excited about teaching and making a difference for my students but with a new focus on non-fiction reading, I don't have quality books to meet their needs and keep them interested.
I work with a combination class consisting of 1st and 2nd graders in a public school in a very low socioeconomic area.
Many of my students come from single parent families where parents just don't make time to read with their children-for many reasons. I have been able to help two parents begin their journey of learning to read. All of my students come to school each day with a smile and they really want to learn. They are like sponges soaking in everything I can teach them. I have just introduced them to a more complex read-aloud text, "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane", and they sit with their mouths open and eyes staring at me waiting for the next adventure in Edward's life. They love to read independently (even if they can only read the pictures) but they want exciting books they can learn from. They're thrilled to see bright, colored pictures and animals and things about our Earth. They just need the resources in their classroom
My Project
I am requesting non-fiction books for my classroom, not only because the children love reading, but also to help prepare them for the new core curriculum standards that have been adopted. I will use the non-fiction books to build knowledge, fluency, vocabulary and to learn about text features. I will use the books to teach summarization, comprehension strategies and research writing. The great part about having many interesting non-fiction books in my classroom is that I can use them for so many activities. The children will revisit many of the same books to find different information to document and then to finally write about them, compare different books and to discuss with each other what they have learned. I will be buying open plastic boxes to sort the books in by topic and label the boxes so students can easily find a book on a topic of their interest at their reading level.
Last school year, I finally sent almost all of my tattered, torn and VERY aged storybooks I had collected over the years home with my students.
It was time to start a new classroom non-fiction collection. The books I have left are very out dated and will only get me by for a couple months until I can either buy new books myself or be fortunate enough to have them donated. With our district focus on non-fiction text, my goal is to accumulate 1,000 books for my classroom library.
