Science and Reading all in one. You can't get any better than when you combine those two subjects! I teach 18 second grade students in a Title I low-income school in rural Alabama. Many of my students are English Language Learners and several come from broken homes and impoverished families. I am also a Special Education Service Provider and have 3 special needs children in my class.
I love teaching second graders and I love the curriculum that I must cover. Unfortunately, I often find that because of time constraints and the amount of reading instruction that second graders must have to be successful in school, something often gets left out. I often feel that I have to choose between teaching science and teaching reading. I hate to have to make this choice because children have a natural love of science.
I would like to provide my students with two colorful sets of science readers for small group guided reading instruction. What better way to overcome my scheduling obstacle than by combining my reading instruction with my science instruction? Each of the two sets consist of 6 copies each of 6 difference titles. Wow! 12 different science topics that I can cover during reading! These colorful high interest non-fiction books will help students build their vocabulary and reading fluency skills. These books will help me to cover all the curriculum without having to worry about sending students to the next grade without the reading AND science skills they need to succeed.
With your help it will make it possible for my students to practice their much needed reading skills with the subject that they love most of all, Science! Thank you in advance for considering this proposal.
