My students need informational text to practice their reading skills. Scholastic News and Science Spin will provide that interesting text. They also need blank books.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all excited English language learners who LOVE science!!! When they are thrilled to read, I get excited too! We need text that is at their reading level and will engage them. The wonderful thing about individual magazines is they can share their enthusiasm when they take them home.
Our school consists of eager students who are from low socio- economic homes.
My classroom is comprised of 100% English language learners, and we are focusing on listening and speaking to improve our English. My young scholars love science and would be thrilled to have their "own" magazine to read in class and then take it home. These sweet students do not have resources to buy materials like this. We are implementing the new state Common Core standards and trying to integrate science and social studies as we practice reading and writing standards. These magazines would give us insight into the world around us so we can build knowledge about these interesting subjects. Many of our students do not have the resources to experience the world outside of their own homes and neighborhoods. Creating a science informational book of their own will be amazing!
My Project
Scholastic News will arrive several times a month. We can read the articles and practice real-world skills such as looking at the text features, learning more about the information presented, and then we can use tools such as our highlighters to find information. We can cut out the pictures and write about them, both in informational writing and opinion writing. We can also practice our reading skills. I envision the students taking the magazines home when we are done with them, and sharing the information with their families. Involving the families in the process will help bridge the gap between home and school. I feel these "simple" magazines have so many uses and the students, even though they are reading below grade level, should be able to read them because they are at a lower reading level, but with interesting text. They can then add details to the blank book and make their own science books!
This project will improve reading, speaking, and science skills in my classroom.
I hope to give them a love of reading and science as we explore the text in these readers. It will open up their views to the world around them. Most of my students do not have the resources at home to go on "weekend excursions" outside of their own neighborhood. These readers have so many uses and will help us to practice many grade level standards. I love that they can bring the magazines home after we are done.
