Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Brook, Lexi, Reeses, Mads, Small, and Julissa are members of our middle school's first Destination Imagination team. Even though these girls come from a low income area with no funding support from the district, they are determined to create a performance project demonstrating to their classes and the school that science and the arts can intertwine.

These girls are 7th and 8th grade students who are interested in learning more about science and engineering skills. They have chosen a Destination Imagination project that will feature a science based device within a student written dramatic scene. The final work will feature an understanding of three scientific concepts which they will teach to 7th grade ELA and Drama classes using their scene.

The story will showcase the talents and academic learning of these ladies who will develop the props, scenery, costumes, story, and scientific device based on their own imaginations, creativity, and teamwork. The team can't wait to show their classmates what they've created!

Students are learning engineering design skills, scientific concepts, teamwork, creative problem solving, storytelling, workmanship, budgeting, and acting basics while demonstrating how to teach scientific concepts such as Newton's Laws of Motion, leverage, and physics to a middle school audience. The team is excited both for the regional tournament and sharing their learning with many classes at our school.

In Their Own Words

"Destination Imagination is a way for a group of people to come together and create something that is amazing. It is a way for people to learn to work together, build, and tell well put together stories and compete to see who's team worked together the best, and who's machine is the best" explained Mads.

Lexi said, "This helps me learn all about new things in science like Newton's laws of motion and aerodynamics to be able to make the project".

Julissa shared, "I am developing leadership skills from being a part of the team because I am given a chance to give my opinion, give ideas, try my ideas and build others' ideas. I can have a chance to speak and suggest things to the group and 'lead' the group when we all agree on an idea."

Reeses said, "I have learned to include everyone and to listen to everyone's ideas."

Brook summarized, "the team will use the fees and materials to build a project that will help us learn new things and show our creativity and skills. We demonstrated teamwork and showed our learning to other students."

Julissa said, "our team demonstrates that women are included in the sciences by teaching others about the topics of levers, physics, and electricity and we can possibly interest others in those topics."
