Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Think about coming into a kindergarten classroom with students who have varied ethnic backgrounds and whose primary language is not English. These students often need extra support for learning English but always manage to come to school with the biggest smiles on their faces. Every day, I teach these students who want to learn English, and I teach them how to read and write.
Many of these students do not have English language support at home.
Every day, I immerse them in the English language and help them become successful. My school prides itself in being able to bring students together for creative endeavors. With help from donors, we've already been able to fund multiple successful and engaging projects.
My Project
My students are learning to become avid readers, scientists, and math experts. There is only one problem, we don't have the materials to support our learning! Currently our books are falling apart! Tape and staples don't even hold the books together anymore. We have been learning about shapes in math, but have no games to help enhance this chapter of our curriculum. In science, we have been learning about how to look closely at items so we can draw and write about them, but we have no magnifying glasses to do so. Kindergarten needs to be a hands on experience for children, and that is exactly what this project is trying to create.
Having these new materials in the classroom would greatly enhance my students learning and teach them how to be amazing kindergartners.
These materials will help my students learn to become scientists, mathematicians, and avid readers. With having a portion of my class' population as ESL, learning with these new materials will help them learn the English language even more.
