Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach an early intervention class for struggling first graders in an inner-city school. My children live in housing projects and do not get much of a chance to experience and appreciate the wonders of nature. Still, they are fascinated with all aspects of the world around them. For years I have taught a unit on plants and purchased supplies for sprouting and growing plants. Although my students always enjoy growing plants from seeds, we have not been able to see the whole plant because so much is happening underground! I am asking for the equipment needed for my students to view the entire life cycle of plants. The Root-Vue farm allows children to see the roots and vegetables grow underground and the Sprout and Grow Window allows them to see the sprouting of seeds and the roots as the plants grow. For this project, my 15 children will plant and care for seeds. We will watch the plants grow and observe what is happening underground as the plants mature. After our careful attention, I hope my students will be able to taste the veggies they have tended and watched grow from seeds! The joy of growing and caring for their own garden is an experience that my children have never had. I want them to be able to observe ALL parts of the process, roots and all.
