Chemistry is an extremely engaging and new subject to 8th graders at our school. Chemistry gives them that spark in their eyes that comes with completely new material and interaction. We have an extra science classroom to facilitate students this year and our materials are fairly non-existent.
My students are an amazing group of kids that learn through inquisitive question and answer (as well as traditional).
However, the most engaged I've seen students is when physically touching objects and building things with their own hands. The school they attend is near a major city and is in what is considered an urban school district.
My Project
The few cylinders we currently have are spread between 4 science classes and teachers. With our schedule of teaching, sometimes there is not enough time to spread out the cylinders or even the lessons between teachers and students. These ten additional cylinders will help ensure that all students have a chance to experience hands-on learning with various areas in chemistry and possibly for hydrology later in the year. The cylinders can teach things like the distribution of water on Earth as a visual (having students fill the cylinder to 970 mL with salt water, another 20 with ice, and the final 10 with fresh water).
Kinesthetic activities like this really touch some students and give them that understanding that can't be conveyed in any other way. In chemistry, several students can share a single cylinder with a solution so that each students can individually get what they need for their own experiments (Water in cylinder can be individually used in test tubes for dilute measuring).
Donations to this request are vital to giving hands-on students an outlet with which they can comprehend processes in science that auditory and visual learners can gain without additional lab instruments.
The classroom is already set up to help students succeed visually and with audio, all that's needed now is a helping hand to those who need hands-on learning. Thank you for taking your time and reading this request.
