Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember being bored after you had finished an assignment? Do you remember being told to doodle, sleep, or read while waiting for your peers? With these kits, students will have a variety of content related activities to participate in when they finish their work or have free time.
I teach around ninety 6th grade students every day.
These students come from all across the District of Columbia to attend our public charter school. To attend, students simply have to apply and win a lottery system, there is no achievement requirement. With students from every ward of the district, we have a huge range of diversity within our classrooms, including many ELL and special education students. The students are enthusiastic and ready to learn. They truly enjoy hands-on science experiences, often naming them as the "high" of the day in afternoon advisory. I hope to be able to provide them with even more authentic experiences within the classroom.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of engaging Science kits. Each kit is self-contained, meaning that it includes directions and the materials a student would need to use it with little assistance. This will provide a way for students to explore their own interests in more depth by borrowing these kits. It will also enable students to use their time productively if they finish classwork early. The kits cover a variety of topics, ranging from weather to magnets to recycling to slime, so every student will find something that is interesting to them.
This project is important because often students ask to borrow lab equipment, but with my limited resources, I do not have kits to lend out.
This would allow students to pursue their curiosities at home. Students would also be exposed to topics not typically covered in a hands-on way, preparing them for these topics when they are covered in later years.
