This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a teacher to 25 intelligent, resourceful and energetic students in a 5th grade monolingual classroom in Waukegan, IL. Over 90% of my students come from a hardworking minority family. At the same time, most of my students live in a low income, high needs community. I want my classroom to be an environment where they come in excited and eager to learn. To achieve this, I want to give them as many updated and modern tools as I can to create independent and lifelong learners.

My Project

My students need to keep up with the latest advancements in education to spark an interest in science. Science and its concepts can be intimidating to students as it encompasses reading, math and brand new unfamiliar topics. My school is developing a new science curriculum, however it is not finished and therefore I want to use these journals to supplement and extend the present curriculum.

At the same time, the small daily tasks in these journals make science concepts more accessible to students by breaking them into bit sized chunks.

They include various learning formats for visual learners and unique activities to hold the interest of students who may not find science the most engaging topic. My students will love fostering their love of science with these journals!
