Science is More Than Just a Beaker

My students need 8 Science kits, exploring topics including Owl Pellets, a Butterfly Habitat, the Water Cycle and Weather.

My students are self-contained special education students. They come from many different backgrounds such as single family and very low economic levels. These students do not have extras that would contribute to their learning they just get by.

Delta region has many students that have no supplies. If the school does not provide for these students they go without. To overcome their environment they will need to be inspired by learning. I feel that doing hands-on science will be the spark that makes many of these students come to life.

Many of the Student Learning Expectations are difficult to teach without hands-on materials. Students are responsible for watching eggs develop from embryos, butterflies going through metamorphosis and frog changing from a tadpole would seem like miracles. Using weather instruments will also help them understand the weather forecast. These are all real life experiences we need.

If this grant is funded, a spark could be ignited in students that are often ignored. Recently, I did a science experiment with them with materials I brought from home and they were all amazed.
