There is nothing more exciting than seeing a student's face light up when I say it is time for science. The children in my class are eager to explore new concepts and learn about science through discovery. Playing games and working with hands-on materials will engage my students.
I am a teacher in a high poverty school in Indiana.
My students come from supportive and positive families who are hard working. Many times, my children do not have access to games and other hands-on manipulatives in their homes due to economic restrictions. My class is filled with children who are eager to participate fully in the learning process. They are excited to use manipulatives and games in their learning.
My Project
The children in my classroom need the opportunity to see concepts in a variety of ways as part of their learning process. Having learning centers and reading materials that are organized in a new different way can often inspire students. These science learning centers can be used in a small group setting to introduce concepts as well as to remediate as needed. The children would be able to check out the learning centers to share at home with their families. It is my hope by involving the families the children can share some of what they are learning in the classroom.
I will be able to use the materials in individual learning centers too which my class participates in while I am meeting with small groups. Having highly engaging activities in these centers keeps students focused while my attention is focused on the small group of children I am working with through guided reading. These materials will be used in a variety of ways to help facilitate student learning.
The ability to use the center supplies as well as the reading materials in my classroom would allow my class to stay engaged during station time.
These materials would also be used during small group learning. The children would be able to share these materials with their peers as well as their families. Science concepts are better understood when children are able to work with materials collaboratively and hands-on.
