I teach in a federally funded Title I school. This means that over 40% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches. We have students who come to school from a rich home environment and some who come with having very little and never get the life experiences such as going to the park, zoo, movies, or eating in restaurants. I try my best to create a warm and inviting space for children to have a place to grow and learn.
My Project
I am requesting specific science materials that we will learn about during Kindergarten. Children love to listen to books and see the pictures, but to get their hands on items that go along with the units we are studying will ensure that the concept is really being learned.
We learn about the life cycles of frogs, butterflies, and chickens.
I have requested a hands-on pocket chart that includes vocabulary words with pictures that the children can move and manipulate. To go along with that I have asked for actual life cycle toys the students can put in the correct order.
Other items I would like for my classroom are insects they can look at with magnifying glasses and big chunky plastic insects that they can compare and touch. We study the weather, so I have asked for a tornado in a bottle. We also have a unit we study about the farm. There is a hands-on learning kit "all about farm". At the end of the unit, I will take my class to actually visit a farm.
