Science is for the Birds: An Ecology Field Experience (2)

My students need nine pairs of binoculars to use on their ecology field experience this spring.

I teach highly-motivated students in a special needs classroom in a high poverty district, arts-oriented school.

This year my classroom had no money available for school supplies. In a science classroom this poses a very difficult learning situation for my students.

My students were fortunate enough to receive a small grant to pay for a school bus (one-day field trip). This spring I plan to bring my students from the city to a nature preserve. This will be the first time many of my students have left the city, and also the first time some of them will see many aspects of nature hands-on. My students need more binoculars to complete a study they will design on ornithology. Many ecological concepts will be taught in the field and in the classroom through observing the lives of various avian species.

Your donation would give my students an opportunity to complete inquiry-based field research that will help them become scientists at a very young age. This experience would also increase their performance on assessments, which will help them in high school and potential college endeavors.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
