Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a diverse group of boys and girls who love science, and are eager to apply the concepts they're learning to hands-on investigations. They consistently make real world connections that link their book knowledge to application and demonstration of science lessons.

My students' curiosity about how science explains facets of their daily life underscores the joy of finding significance and relevance in our educational system.

Equally significant is that their play has also taken on relevance to their study of science. For example, they have to begun to explore how different combinations of soap and water produce different size and consistency of bubbles. The size or mass of the bouncy balls they play with requires different amounts of force to set in motion.

My Project

My classroom lacks the basic science measuring equipment for students to conduct investigations. By providing the measuring materials, my students will not only be able to understand the significance of using scientific processes (planning precision, implementing, reviewing, revising, communicating) to answer their questions, but will also have a concrete example of how math is intrinsic to best practices in science. Our science class emphasis this year is how we can conduct investigations with every day materials to understand (complex) scientific concepts like chemical reactions. To do this we must have access to measuring equipment. This equipment is integral to the students' meaningful understanding of variables in any investigation. Measuring equipment would allow to easily put into practice this building block of the scientific process.
