Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Mark Van Doren said, "The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery". As a science teacher, I have the opportunity to provide hands-on experiments which helps my students discover ideas to help them understand science concepts and take ownership of their learning.
I teach at a Title I school with a student population rich in ethnic and cultural diversity.
Most are ESL (English as a Second Language) students. For the majority of my students, this is their first exposure to science. They have the great opportunity to be able to come to my class for an hour a week for a hands-on science lesson. I have sixty fourth graders and sixty fifth graders that will benefit from this project.
My Project
My students love to learn about electricity and static because they use it in their everyday lives. However they need to be able to access it in a safe way. To learn about static electricity we need electroscopes, balloons, and a Van de Graaf Electrostatic Generator.
My students need to understand that some liquids are conductors of electricity but need to be able to experiment in a safe way.
I'm excited to use the conductivity of solutions kit to show this. Other items we need to learn about electricity are lightbulbs, buzzers, and conductivity meters. We also need a classroom timer to help me pace lab time. Having a big timer helps the students know how much time they have left to experiment. We are so excited to learn more about electricity in a safe way!
