Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are an urban school with a 75% majority of students using reduced-price or free lunch. We are located in an urban area, and have a large population size (around 1,100 students). Our school also has a large immigrant population which makes us very diverse. I work with a group of 125 students, of which a third receives ESL support.
Our student population is urban, diverse and largely economically challenged.
Many students are immigrants and need ESL support. Despite the challenges, our school environment is positive. Our diversity supports a sense of tolerance in our school environment. Staff and students support each other and attempt to make the best of what we have.
My Project
Chromebooks allow teachers and students to use google classroom as a virtual space for class assignments to be posted and reviewed. Teachers can design writing assignments using google docs, which require students to state claims and support those with evidence. Better yet, students can practice searching the web for reliable sources (a necessary skill for virtually any professional career) and find evidence to support their stated claims.
This investigation based learning with a focus on writing with evidence produces more enduring understandings, because it's student-centered and skill-based.
Chromebooks are also a perfect tool for students to access online images and videos of real phenomena, such as cells and cellular processes for example.
