This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My student body consists of approximately 100 students from poor socioeconomic backgrounds. The racial makeup of my students is 95% African-American, 3% Caucasian and 2% Hispanic. A majority of my students come from homes where parents do not have a college education. It is the objective of the school to ensure that the students are on the path to being college and career ready by the time they leave middle school. However, this is quite difficult because many of the students are reading two to three grade levels below the national average. In order to create greater opportunities for success, we strive to create challenging and engaging lessons, which students find exciting.
My Project
This is a part of a 3-part project. It is my goal to have a 1:1 ratio of students to tablets. Tablets will be used on an almost daily basis in my classroom. We have a population of students who come to classrooms that do not have the supplies needed to provide them with opportunities to use different types of technology in the classroom.
The Amazon Fire tablets will allow students to participated in simulated labs using an online website known as phET.
The Amazon Fire tablets will also allow students to cooperate with their classmates in the creation of media projects based on science, multicultural literature, interview peer students to gather their understanding of science projects, and provide electronic access to a broad array of online literature.
Students will use the tablets to create visual representations of their understandings of the science and literary texts we use. Students will present these technologically based projects to their peers to illustrate their understanding of classroom concepts. This will give students more opportunities to improve their skills in the use of technology. These technologically acquired skills will benefit students in classes such as math, science, history, and others.
