My students arrive each day in need of structure and professionals that are willing to tap into their world to help them progress in communication, socialization and academics. Autism often causes them to block out the world. I work diligently to pull them in using sensory work and reinforcement that targets their highly preferred desires.
By getting kitchen appliances we can teach our students cooking skills that will enhance and enrich the curriculum.
I teach in an ARTS infused school where my students are included and accepted. Because our curriculum includes music, art, STEAM and drama; students are better able to display their strengths while working on their goals and areas of needs.
I have grown to understand that as I observe what makes my students excited; I can use that excitement to motivate them to learn and excel. It is all about the motivation.
My Project
Cooking is a super way to teach math, science and health all at one time. Food motivates EVERYONE.
Getting students engaged in cooking activities is a hands on way to use math skills and demonstrate science as food is created.
Our students do not always make good eating choices and do not understand the basics of how food is created. Using the blender to make smoothies will allow them to experience fruit in a new delicious way. Using the burner and pots/pans, I can teach my students to make dishes that are discussed in our literature such as grilled cheese, eggs, and meat. Using the blender will be a tremendous opportunity to practice measuring and reading a recipe to make bread, cakes or cookies. So by giving them the opportunity to be actively involved in the process of cooking; students will connect academic learning to real world experiences
It is my goal to make learning real for my students so it becomes part of their life.
