I currently teach a diverse population of Kindergarten students in a San Francisco public school. Approximately 65% of the student body receives free or reduced-price lunch, and half of my students are English Language Learners.
The school I'm currently teaching at focuses its attention to reading, writing, and math. At the Kindergarten level, we focus heavily of pre-reading, pre-writing, and early math skills. One of the reasons that our school focuses on these particular subjects is "testing." Schools are tested and ranked based on these subjects, and it has left very little room for creativity, science, and other subjects. I've been teaching Kindergarten for 5 years, and I feel very saddened that I have not been able to teach science the way I would like to. We have a science curriculum and science kits, but we do not have the resources to replenish our kits as well as find the missing components to the kits, so I end up not having the time and energy to teach science in the classroom.
I would like to ask for some new and fun science kits and curriculum that coincides with our current science curriculum, and that would be readily available for use without having to replenish the kits and looking for missing components of the kits. Science is a fun way to integrate with reading, writing and math. It leads the students to explore and evaluate what they see, and to question what is happening. It teaches critical thinking skills without the students knowing that we are teaching all these important skills. All students would benefit from these kits because it has no prerequisites to learning. It will engage all students, and allows them to actively participate instead of passively participate by just reading a book.
Thank you.
