I am blessed to teach sixth-grade science at a Title I school. My students are curious, questioning and inventive. Studies have shown that students learn better by "doing" than just by "hearing". My goal is to provide my students with a variety of hands-on stations with each unit we cover in school.
Middle schoolers question the world around them, are deep thinkers and I want to feed their natural curiosity.
Hands-on activities help students connect what teachers say with what students understand. I want to provide fun and engaging experiences that will stick with them way beyond our classroom.
My Project
Students learn best when they can dig in and get involved. My goal is to provide students with as many hands-on experiences as I can to show science in action. Popping popcorn 3 ways to prove conduction, convection, and radiation. "Growing Gummy Bears" to introduce the principals of Scientific Investigation. Making a soda geyser to show chemical change. Experimenting with different candies and their reaction to common acids (to mimic stomach acid). Each of these experiments helps the student connect to the materials I introduce.
Watching their eyes light up when they connect to science- that's what it is all about.
In addition, I also want to provide self-paced stations for our chemistry/atoms, weather, conservation and water units so that students can explore the different principals that we are learning. Having proper school supplies and resources is critical to helping students achieve. Science is alive and active and I want my students to be engaged and inspired.
