Chemistry is hard to teach to high school and college students. Now, imagine the challenges faced with trying to get these same concepts taught to eighth graders. In our classroom, we try hand-ones approaches as often as we can. Nothing is impossible with the right attitude and the correct tools!
Our school is a rural middle school housing grades sixth through eighth.
We have a very high number of poor students and no good sources of outside donors of money. Many of our teachers spend large amounts of their own money to fund the projects throughout the year. We are located in a small town with no interstate access. Many of our students will never get very far from this little town. We want to provide the same opportunities that larger well-funded schools provide.
My Project
We have many chemical laboratory activities that we complete that require tweezers for safety purposes. We share tweezers with the 7th grade classes for their dissecting activities also. These tweezers will be used by approximately 500 students each year. We already have chemical activities and dissecting specimens. We are limited on how we use these because we don't have the proper tools. Tweezers for the entire class will allow every student to experience the hands-on approach.
There are so many things in a science laboratory that tweezers are used for. When dissecting, tweezers allow the students to better identify objects without destroying the specimen. In our chemical labs, not only do the tweezers keep the students safe, but they also keep the results of the experiment accurate.
The four seventh and eighth grade science teachers work together each year to give our 500 students the most hands-on science experiences that we can.
We are always looking for funding to keep our out of pocket expenses down. The four of us write several grants each year. We also use resources from 2 colleges to help us meet our needs.
