Fifth grade is an exciting year that allows students to grow and become more independent in their learning. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and all come together to create our perfect little classroom family. This year has some extra excitement to add since our classroom family gets the opportunity to stay together for another school year!
Our classroom is a positive and student centered learning environment.
We have it all in one Gen Ed room- Autism, visual impairments, gifted learners, learning disabilities, foster students, emotions, reading deficits, ADHD... but we do not let it define us.
Creating a true classroom community encourages students to take control of their learning, creating lifelong learners.
My Project
Graphic novels are a hot commodity for students today. The format makes reading exciting for students, many of whom have been reluctant readers. Adding in the pictures entices kids to read and enjoy the material in front of them.
Combining the graphic format with science material not only increases student's interest in reading, but it brings an informational text tie in!
Suddenly you have readers and students learning about the world around them... a fantastic combination!
Having these science novels as a part of our classroom library will broaden the science perspective and understanding of my students and increase their reading abilities. The topics rage from space to animals to machines, all subjects that will help spark an interest in further science exploration and research as well as tying into our science curriculum standards at the elementary level.
