I teach kindergarten at Tenderloin Community School In San Francisco. I believe that facts can be learned by reading, drawing, and writing about what you have read. My students enjoy creating art projects that are able to show what they have learned in other content areas. Every Friday my class has Science Fridays! This is when we focus on one animal and learn about its characteristics, habitat, and habits. Our standards-based language arts curriculum features 'alpha friends' which are animals who emphasize letter sounds and this is how we decide which animal to choose. This is a program that integrates writing, science, and art.
We first write 3 things that we know about the subject and then we draw what we wrote about. Then at some point in our day we create a work of art that highlights what we have learned from our research.
One week we studied octopuses. We made painted paper octopuses that hung from the ceiling. Another week we studied the myth of the unicorn and made faux tapestries. Another week we made kangaroos with pouches .The kids really get excited about art , science, and writing!
My students come from extremely diverse backgrounds. Most are from low-income families. Exciting art supplies for our weekly projects would certainly enrich their learning experience.
