My students need books from different science series including Ecosystems of the World, Community Connections, Freaky True Science, Wildlife Oddities, Bug Camp, Investigating Plant Life Cycles, and The Bee Book.
Students love the smell, look, and feel of new books; books that stimulate and open their minds. But dwindling school funding closes the door on such rich opportunities. We are calling on "the village" to help us maintain a captivating library collection, pertinent to 21st Century readers.
Located close to a state university, our school has extraordinary community involvement.
Ironically, however, our school funding for the library is only $500 annually. That's less than 83 cents per student. If you have bought any books after the year 1900, you know that most cost well over that. In fact, the average library-bound book is about $18. Thus, we constantly scramble for grants and donations to stay current. Our average book age is the year 2000. We aspire to stay ahead of this, even raising the age of our collection in areas, such as Social Science, Language and Literature, which are currently in the 1990's.
My Project
This project requests a variety of books from different science series including Ecosystems of the World, Community Connections, Freaky True Science, Wildlife Oddities, Bug Camp, Investigating Plant Life Cycles, and The Bee Book.
Contemporary science books for my middle and higher readers will bolster their ability to learn and do research at the current and next science standards.
The Common Core Standards stress informational texts. By the time students are in fourth grade, according to Common Core, they ought to be reading fifty percent nonfiction. Our students need updated books on science throughout the 500's section. They may use these books to spark interest, satisfy their curiosity, or reference for research projects. A book is more likely to leave the shelf when it looks current. And, since publishers are making better informational texts in this day and age, this project enables us to offer these titles to our avid readers. We know through increasing circulation numbers and the squeals of joy that these donations are critical factors in our students' enjoyment and intellectual growth.
