The most popular genre amongst teen audiences is Sci-fi/fantasy. In order to raise appreciation and interest in reading, I am adding a Sci-fi unit to my curriculum. This exceptional book, Ender's Game, will reach children in the classroom and hopefully re-ignite the love of reading.
I am lucky enough to teach a diverse group of students in California.
My students hunger for knowledge, even though at times they aren't aware of it. Some of the public school materials are antiquated and students have a hard time relating. However, these students devour knowledge they enjoy or find relevant.
My Project
By using literature to reach the students, I can foster the joy of reading. I noticed in my first couple years of teaching that many of the students were not interested in the books we were authorized to teach. Immediately I began to question why and the resounding response was, "This book is too old."
While we should embrace timeless classics, we should also temper it with the knowledge that until a person appreciates literature they will never truly embrace it. After doing research I found that the Sci-fi/fantasy genre is the most popular and fastest growing genre amongst teens. Ender's Game is a book that will reach students. It has enriched characters, a powerful and engaging plot, and is not so antiquated as to be unrelatable to our children. The book provides challenging vocabulary, and powerful themes. All of which makes this an amazing book to read as well as teach.
A class set of Ender's Game will enhance our Science Fiction unit.
By reading such an enjoyable, yet educational novel, we will show students that reading is a wonderful activity. Students need to see that reading can be fun, interesting and exciting. But we can't always do that with books written hundreds of years before they were born. We modernize everything in our lives. I am attempting to do that for literature before it is too late.
