Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

What if human clones do exist? I teach 7th grade Science in an urban public school district in Illinois. My students are in a high-need community and are predominately Spanish speaking.

Recently my students have shown an interest in many different science fiction stories. You may be thinking, "WHAT? 7th graders like Science Fiction?" Believe it or not, they love to examine the "what if?" questions that surround the nature of SCI-FI. As I've noticed this, I can't help but ask myself - what better time to read an awesome novel that has won multiple awards, including the 2003 Newbery honor award.

By providing me with 33 copies of "The House of the Scorpion", my students will be able to read the book as a class, discussing issues like human cloning, the value of human life, and the importance of responsibility and friendship, all set in the future - in a land between the U.S. and Mexico. Could it get any better?

Your help will ensure that my students have access to the kind of literature they are interested in. You could be providing 33 students with the opportunity to read a text they otherwise wouldn't have the chance to.
