Experiencing high school can evoke every emotion: fear or joy, angst or optimism, and sometimes all of these at once! Our classroom is a great place to begin learning about the outside world and how to be the best person possible in it. Each student is unique, from young athletes and artists to students with individual learning plans and young leaders. We're the 4th most diverse high school in the nation, and it shows in my classes!
My students are immersed in a journey that will culminate in college, leadership, citizenship, and life.
I want to prepare them to be the best readers they can possibly be, the kindest friends they wish they had, and heroes that their families and friends can be proud to know. High school can be difficult, but this is our chance to start on the right path.
My Project
I want to support all students in my Sci-fi class. It is so much fun to geek out about alternate worlds and imagine what society will be like in ten, twenty, or thirty years. I also welcome all students into my class -- English learners, students with special learning needs, and students taking the class as an elective. Graphic novels make everyone feel welcome, included, and challenged.
Graphic novels bridge the gap between preparing for college and learning to read: they are books we can all read and enjoy.
I want to enrich our rigorous curriculum with more texts and I know graphic novels will be a good fit for everyone. Everyone will have the option to borrow this text to supplement our textbook and then students with special learning needs won't feel singled out. We can share our learning together!
