Help me give my students read "Kindred" by Octavia E. Butler. This is a new unit that I am hoping to teach to seniors.

The surrounding neighborhood is loud, unforgiving and often unkind. My students are resilient, joyful and excited for the future. They are future lawyers, doctors and hopefully, the next President of the United States. They are curious, they are open, they are eager to learn. I teach at a Title I public school, meaning that almost all students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Sometimes, my students come to school without proper utensils, without paper and without having a meal that day.
But they arrive. And showing up is more than half the battle.
Together, we are a team dedicated in shaping our own own futures. In changing the world. We live by a famous Alice Walker quote, "We are the ones we've been waiting for."
We are here.
For our final unit, I would like to try something new, "Kindred" an amazing science fiction novel by Octavia E. Butler. I think that my students will enjoy both the historical and fictional aspect, as well as the science fiction proponent. Further, I want to introduce them to this wonderful piece of literature by a black, female writer. Too often, the literary canon excludes such powerful voices and I want to remedy that.
With a class set of the text, we will be able to read the story, make connections and continue to understand the interconnectedness between our rich histories.
