The students in my first grade class are interested in science, LEGO, making friends, art and cats. They want to succeed even though there are many forces in this country which fight against their efforts. They speak Amharic, Spanish, German, Mandarin, Somali, Latvian, Portuguese and English.
My students are inquisitive, hilarious, honest, and ambitious people.
More than half of them are living in poverty, and yet they have so much drive to learn. With all of those interests and challenges, our school works hard to know each student's name and need.
My Project
Last year I learned how to make bath fizzers by hand. As I was making my own I thought it would be a great activity for my students!
With the science fair coming up soon I thought this project would be perfect opportunity to experiment while also creating a useful gift for someone.
Students will be able to see the effects of mixing together simple ingredients and how chemical reactions can occur. I will demonstrate how to create a bath fizzer using baking soda and citric acid. Then I will guide students in groups to develop a variable recipe and a hypothesis about what they think might happen. This is where optional supplies come in. Students will be able to choose, as a group, whether or not they want to add cornstarch, Epsom salts, scent, or color. Hopefully these experiments will lead to a win in the all-school science fair!
