This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students enjoy using technology in my science class when it is available. My students often work in groups and are asked to work on presentations or projects. Students are often challenged to provide details in their projects that go deeper and beyond of what the textbook may provide.
On paper, our school is located in Compton, California.
Compton is connected with South Los Angeles and the North side of Long Beach, considered one of the roughest areas in the country. My students come with many challenges such as low socioeconomic backgrounds and single family households. In reality, however, my students are extremely bright with a perspective on life that not many students in the country have. Despite the challenges they face at home and outside the school gates, my students excel academically, enjoy math and science, and are very articulate.
Given the chance, provided the tools, and leveling the playing field, these students are able to impact our society and improve our communities. Like any middle school students, they love technology and like attention. My students enjoy creating projects and enjoy presenting those projects in class. Students are more interested in a subject when they can see the relevance and application.
My Project
Students will have the iPad mini available to them to research concepts that are discussed in class. Students will explore and use applications that will enhance their learning beyond taking notes from lectures. Students will also be able to create presentations from the iPad.
Having access to technology in a math and science class is just as important as having access to a textbooks.
Students need to experience the application of technology in an academic setting to help enhance their experience and prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow.
