I am first grade teacher in an urban school in northern California. My 22 students are wonderfully diverse. We are also an inclusive school serving a child with special needs in every class.
Many of my underperforming students have such a high need for learning to read and write that much of curriculum is spent on those subjects, trying to get them ready for the next grade. Often science is pushed aside. This is what I want to change. I want to bring science connected to the state standards to my classroom in fun and engaging ways.
The first grade science curriculum and standards include weather, growing things, and solids and liquids. We can have so much fun growing plants. We need 22 individual greenhouse plant bags that show the root system and hang in the window. We also need super engaging literature that will strengthen children's understanding of plants and weather. What fun the children will have exploring measurement and solids and liquids. We need measuring materials and solid and liquid discovery tubes. The children also need GEARS exploration manipulatives. All the materials I found are going to excite the children and give them the ability to explore science while covering the state standards.
With your generous donation you can bring science to our 22 children and those in the coming years. Help make me a better teacher of science to children so eager to learn. Thank you for considering my proposal.
