Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students have limited resources and no computer at home. They don't have many books and may not have a library card or the time to get there. They need help thinking of science experiments that can enter into our annual science fair. "No, a volcano isn't the best science experiment."
My students attend a Title I school in California.
Many of them are learning English as a second language and don't have a lot of academic support at home. But they love the science fair! They enjoy walking around the classrooms and the auditorium explaining to their parents what all the experiments are about.
My Project
Every year our school has a giant science fair. Most students participate and complete the experiment at home with their family's help. But some families are better able to help than others. These books will level the playing field a little. In the past I've only had two or three classroom books that I was able to lend out to the students who didn't have computer access or a library card. When this project is funded I will have a small science experiment library that my students can use to help guide them in their work.
I'd like my third graders to get a good head start on possible careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.
They need the opportunity to discover what interests them and begin to do some independent study and experiments.
