My Students

I currently teach 8th grade science, and I try to do some type of hands-on activity each class. Every day, there will be students out of their seats creating, working, and experimenting.

I teach in an urban environment, where approximately 60% of the population qualifies for free and reduced-price lunch.

The population is very diverse, and Asian and Hispanic students represent the majority. Something special about my school is that clubs are embedded into the school day. Students are able to participate in activities that interest them and that they have a choice in. Having clubs during the school day definitely helps to make a well rounded student.

My Project

Currently my school is full distance learning and my students have limited access to supplies that will allow them to conduct science experiments at home. We have daily Zoom sessions and I attempt to guide my students through some kind of activity where they cannot be in front of the screen for a moment.

My goal is to provide hands-on science experiences at home by giving students materials that will be used in a variety of different labs.

The materials will be bagged up and given to all of the 8th grade students during textbook distribution.

The cellophane paper and the glow in the dark tape will be used to illustrate properties of light. The water beads will be used to model the scientific method and laws of motion. The balloons and the craft sticks will be used in activities that involve force. I tried to find hands-on activities that are cost effective and can reach all of the 8th graders.
