My students need grow lights and alternative energy kits to allow them to study the effects of global warming and how going green can improve our environmental situation.
Helping students to live green is hard when our old building promotes the opposite. These materials will help emphasize we can all try to live an environmentally friendly lifestyle, no matter where we live.
My students in this little rural area of Iowa have a lot of potential, but not a lot of financial backing.
I teach about 100 seventh graders and come into contact with another 100 eighth graders. Most come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. As seventh graders, they still have a love of school and science, but are ready to turn off the lights if they are not reached soon.
We live in an area surrounded by wind farms, ethanol plants (and livestock farms). However, my students have no idea how these influence their lives.
My Project
With these materials, the students will learn where energy is produced, and how it is produced. They will explore alternative sources from the coal fired electric plants we normally use in Iowa. They will also grow plants and explore various methods of using solar energy (passive versus active). Hopefully the students will also create a means to share their results and information with others. The local science fair will benefit by a larger number of participants in the energy division.
This project is so important because the future of our world depends upon it.
Will global climate change wreak havoc on our world? How do we change that? These students will be controlling our destiny and provide the decisions of the future. They need to be an informed public!
