My students are a very diverse group. They come from different backgrounds and beliefs. Some kids have access to technology and some don't have it at home. With the rise in the knowledge of technology for current jobs, all students need to know how to be tech savvy. Our school has a diverse population with 95% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Many face challenges in and out of school and in their homes. School is a place of refuge for some, and I want to provide ample opportunities for them to shine where they are in their development. As their teacher, I see a group of wonderful children full of energy and a willingness to jump in and try new things.
With Arizona being 49th in state funding, it is very difficult to give all students what they need.
In order for our students to compete in the job market, they must be exposed to and be able to solve problems.

My students need great books to learn about science.
We study amazing things in second grade and we need thrilling literature for children to become immersed in their learning. Some of the topics we study, the students can walk outside and explore on their own. Other topics, like penguins, are very difficult to observe within our classroom.
Students need to be able to hold the books and read about these amazing creatures!
Our science focuses on the life cycles of different animals. We actually have caterpillars to grow in our rooms! The students need to see other life cycles, through books, to truly understand what the cycle of life is.
We are also studying penguins this year! We will learn about all the different kinds of penguins, from the amazing Emperor Penguin to the adorable Macaroni Penguin. Since we cannot bring the penguins into our classroom, we need these great books to show the students how these exotic and endangered creatures live.
Help us bring the world into the palm of our hands!
