Students in my district are from a rural community, with some strong agricultural and industrial jobs for some parents, but with more than 75% of our students living in poverty. Access to resources, including cell phone and internet service is not readily available throughout the county. Some students come from foster care, others from large blended families, while others are from agricultural century-farm families.
We know that active learning, 3-D science education focused on process and problem solving helps middle school students think critically about their world for the entirety of their lives; this is a critical stage in brain development.
Creating active learning experiences takes resources above and beyond opening a textbook published decades ago. One area that I need help developing is molecular chemistry. I would like to use plastic models, instead of the less expensive alternate, using involving using what would otherwise be food. Also, I would like to connect with mentors during class time to help guide student projects.
My Project
Some of our students receive school supplies at the beginning of the year. In the disposable culture that some students live in, or due to organization, these supplies do not make it very long. Many families can not afford to purchase additional supplies throughout the year. Pencils, colored pencils, and markers are essential for students to participate in class. As well, I am asking for restocking on restockable materials for spring lessons so that students will be able to have manipulatives for, most importantly, magnetism. Without these materials, students will not have the opportunity to explore and engage, creating an understanding for the concepts being presented.
