My students are creative, thoughtful and inquisitive about the natural world around them. They absolutely love hands-on activities, explorations and experiments. As often as possible, we move our science classroom to the great outdoors to see concepts at work in the real world. Wildlife experiences and natural habitats on our campus are few and far between, however.
Our school is part of an agricultural community in which most families are hard-working, but have limited resources due to multi-generational family structures.
My Project
At science camp students will experience a plethora of hands-on activities as they explore curriculum such as science, mathematics, visual and performing arts, among others. They will gain important life and social skills such as self-confidence, responsibility, and trust as they complete outdoor adventures, lessons and team-building activities.
I bet you still remember your science camp adventures!
Overnight trips are amazing milestones in students’ lives. The sum total of this experience absolutely cannot be replicated in a typical classroom. Students will be able to apply what they have learned for many years to come.
In addition to the multi-dimensional curriculum, the outdoor school program focuses on the development of social skills. Interpersonal skills such as problem-solving and making new friends are developed throughout the week as students learn to live together in the residential setting as members of a mini community. Students participate in campfires, folk dancing, housekeeping duties, cooperative tasks, games, and other team-building activities.
When we return to school, students will be excited to develop stories in Writers’ Workshop to recap their science camp escapades. We will also expand upon science lessons at camp with additional lab experiments in the classroom.
