Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I'm teaching for the first year in inner city Chicago at East Garfield Park. My title is the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Science Teacher. These students have not had a chance to learn science in a tactile way in which they see the benefit and are excited by their discoveries. Although the emphasis is on tactile experiences, the students should also have a varied knowledge base for their learning. I have many students that have more knowledge than that is being taught so I am asking that my classroom library may be filled with great books to extend my science lessons. My school is at a 97% high needs rate in which the students receive free lunch. We are doing a lot with a little but there can never be too much help. As I navigate through my first year of teaching, I do not want my students to be left out on the best experience in science because I simply do not have the materials that they would be interested in crawling up on the couch to read about the wonders of space to the microorganisms that are bountiful.
