My students are great. They work really hard in the culinary arts classroom to produce dishes they have never tasted or seen before.
They stay after and come during their free time to make sure everything runs more smoothly in the classroom.
These students may not be the best academically, but when we get in the labs, they show off skills needed in their future careers which cannot be practiced in the typical classroom. These students love coming into the culinary classroom and getting out of their academic classrooms. Some do not realize they are still learning vocabulary, math, and more because they enjoy the cooking aspect so much.
My Project
There are so many options for growing herbs and vegetables indoors. Most students have probably never grown their own vegetables or herbs and don't realize how delicious this food is! Our local grocery store only has spinach, iceberg lettuce, and cilantro in their produce section when it comes to leafy greens and herbs. With this growing kit, I can show them how they can grow their own without having to invest a lot of time or money that they may not have.
This indoor growing kit will give students experiences which may help them in future careers such as natural sciences managers, dietitians, nutritionists, agriculture, or park naturalists.
They need to know how to cook their own food in delicious ways, conduct experiments to see what helps the herbs and vegetables grow best, use fresh vegetables and herbs, grow herbs and vegetables not readily available due to being in a food desert, and educate others on growing and cooking your own food. This project can help me teach them how to do all of this!
