Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our day starts by chanting "We are future Scientists, Technologists, Engineers, Artists, and Mathematicians". My students spend their day engaged in integrated lessons in science, technology, engineering, and math.
My students are English Language Learners who speak 5 different languages which include Kunama, Marshallese, Spanish, Arabic, and Somali.
All of my students receive free or reduced lunch and assistance from the local clothing bank for basic needs such as socks and shoes. Our school is located amongst trailer parks and low-income housing. 97% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Local churches provide hygiene kits with toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, washcloths and combs to students. Many parents work multiple jobs and most students live with several family members in single bedroom homes or apartments. Despite much adversity, my students are always smiling, excited to learn, and teach me something new every day.
My Project
My students will use the Let's Find Out Magazine (LFO) and Science Spin Magazine to build sight word skills, learn new science and social studies concepts, and become exposed to informational text. Students will take home additional math, science, and social studies printable's from the LFO website to use as additional connections to the reading from the magazine.
These classroom magazines will be used to build a school-to-home connection so parents will have a resource that will provide their child with additional exposure to sight words and informational text.
These resources will help build reading skills along with science and social studies information related to real-world happenings.
