I have students from every reading and language level possible. In our building we have 15 different languages represented. Some of my students were born here in the United States to non-English speaking parents. Others are refugees from camps in Burma and Thailand.
Each one of my ELL students has a deep desire and motivation to learn about the world around them.
My classroom is filled with technology and engaging non-fiction resources to help them learn English while building their background knowledge on exciting topics. My students are thoughtful learners who continually ask questions and seek to propel their learning forward.
My Project
Our district has streamlined our Science and Social Studies topics to align with our reading curriculum. The current texts books are much too challenging for my beginning ELL students.
I am requesting books from Benchmark Education because they have resources specifically written for ELL students. I have chosen books that align with our Science and Social Studies topics so that my ELL students can study the same topics at their language level. This way they can still engage with the content and participate in classroom discussions without being bogged down with text that is too complicated. These books will scaffold their learning towards proficiency.
Having these books will allow my ELL students to feel like they can be part of the discussion.
Imagine wanting to understand so badly, but being unable to read the text. The Benchmark books allow my students to reach understanding and participate with grade level content, but at their own language level. They get so excited at the rich graphics in these books. They are always eager to learn new non-fiction topics.
